I am Chelsi Rae. I am a freshman at Lehigh University. I am on the track and field team for the heptathlon and high jump. In my free time I enjoy visual arts using mediums like oil paints and charcoal. My work investigates the absence of black people in European art. Oftentimes, people of color are diminished to the background and the way in which they are portrayed suggests a lower status. As a young black woman myself, I yearn to see people that look like me in history, not as afterthoughts, but as rulers, prophets, and queens. In my investigation, I highlight the narrative of various black protagonists to reimagine history, centering on the triumphs and positions of royalty that my people held.
